Tampa-born rapper, Gat$ delivers substance without sacrificing style in his new track “CHEAPSKATE” with CHASETHEMONEY.
This is the second single Gat$ has dropped in anticipation of his upcoming project, Life on Film, scheduled to drop this fall. This will mark his 10th album dropped in the past decade.
“CHEAPSKATE” is an inevitable reaction to the growing wave of rappers relying on phony lyrics to cater to perceived audience expectations. The lyrics show Gat$’ frustration with rappers who put out anything — regardless of quality — and possibly ones who are not from the South trying to sound like they are. Gat$’ sound is influenced by the region he grew up in. You can hear the regionality in his cadence and the Dirty South influence of his flow. Teaming up with St. Louis producer CHASETHEMONEY, the two keep the Dirty South energy alive, and they keep the sound current in the same breath.
“He ain’t from the field, face funny, that’s a deepfake. He ain’t who he say he is, n–a he a …”
The accompanying visuals, directed by Roberta Rivera and Jan-Michael Reyes, feed into CHASETHEMONEY’s hypnotic beats with a blurred noir feel. The music video stars Gat$ rapping outside of Tampa Lanes Inc., a bowling alley and community staple that closed in 2018. That local reference deepens the track’s authenticity, grounding it even more in the region and his experience.
His previous single, “White Bronco,” featuring former Top Dawg Entertainment rapper REASON, is a melodic and lively track that you can flow with tonally. Gat$ and REASON’s deep voices are carried by the lighter instrumental, with the contrast making it that much more melodic. The track itself is filled with references to O.J. Simpson. The music video shows a similar story to the O.J. Simpson trial, with some of the same themes that were present, such as infidelity and violence.
For fans of Denzel Curry and Saba, I would recommend giving Gat$ a listen and spot in your playlist.
